A Night at the Opera | Young Associates of Opera de Montreal

The drama and excitement of the classical opera were in the air of last Friday’s annual fundraiser, A Night at the Opera. Raising funds for Opera de Montreal, this event special at professionals under 40 years old. The Young Associates, a volunteer committee who have the mission of helping the organization broaden and rejuvenating their public host the event. Our experience at the uplifting event was very positive from beginning to end!

Greeted by marketing personnel from Banque National, their primary sponsor, who gave us a bracelet that enabled you to receive the pictures taken of you during the night immediately.  It was a great start because who doesn’t want professional pictures of themselves after spending so much time getting ready?  Many photographers were on site including a costumed photo booth which assured that everyone could get their picture taken as many times as they wanted.  We also met popular opera characters (costumed actors) such as Carmen who gladly took pictures with us. What a fun, unexpected and interactive experience!

Regarding performances, we had the chance to watch Quebec’s top drag queen performers from the popular show Ils de Jours, Elles de Nuit featuring six totally wild & sparkling drag queens. These queens had energy and captivating stage presence! While venturing on Wilfred Pelletier stage,  where the event was taking place, we walked through a curtain door and experienced the cabaret. The cabaret was a cozy place where professional opera singers were giving performances in a very intimate format. It felt surreal and unique!

The open bar with various drink options was also a nice touch. From cocktails made with Kusmi tea to champagne by Nicolas Feuillate, there was something for everyone. They also served a midnight snack, a welcomed poutine, and some tasty doughnuts. For $150/person (including a donation receipt), you are greatly entertained and support one of the most prestigious cultural organizations of Montreal!

The bad news is that this year’s edition is over.  The good news is that the Young Associates host events all year round.  The next one is a pre-show cocktail and private visit before the performance of La Boheme on May 25 (click here for details). These events are a great way to support the opera financially, enjoy and learn more about this classical art form. Opera newbies are welcome!
