Biographie

Après avoir obtenu son baccalauréat en scénographie à l’École Supérieure de Théâtre de
Montréal (UQAM) en 2016, Gabrielle Carrère a complété sa maîtrise en arts visuels et
médiatiques à l’Université du Québec à Montréal en 2022. Bien qu’elle ait débuté sa carrière
artistique dans la conception de décors et de marionnettes, elle se consacre à la sculpture depuis
2017. Elle a participé à diverses résidences d’artistes, notamment au Maroc, en Espagne et au
Portugal. De plus, elle a pris part à différentes expositions de groupe, dont à Art Mûr à Montréal et
à White Lab à Madrid. Par ailleurs, Gabrielle Carrère a réalisé sa première exposition solo en 2021
à la galerie AVE à Montréal.

Démarche artistique

Mon travail prend ancrage dans une pratique de la sculpture où je crée des œuvres figuratives, lesquelles repré-
sentent l’humain et la nature dans leurs fragilités et leurs vulnérabilités. Par la création de mises en scène sculpturale, je m’intéresse plus particulièrement à la figure de la ruine, de la survivance et à une esthétique de la disparitionet du renouveau. Par un jeu d’assemblages et de combinaisons, je construis des mondes fictifs, une communauté de figures qui transporte à elle seule ses charges symboliques. Les personnages de mes sculptures deviennent eux-mêmes des lieux de narrations et sont la représentation d’expériences sensibles, individuelles ou collectives.

Je travaille la représentation des corps, la cohabitation symbiotique d’êtres hybrides en pleine métamorphose au sein d’une collectivité dans laquelle les éléments spirituels, imaginaires et réels se nourrissent mutuellement. L’argile est ma matière première et principale, celle-ci me rappelle la terre, la fécondité et une certaine matrice. Ainsi, êtres vivants et éléments organiques/inorganiques se mêlent et prennent forme en argile crue ou en céramique dans des sculptures où se côtoient des mondes tant surréalistes que réalistes. Je tente par mes narrations sculpturales, de façonner des mondes.

Biography

After a bachelor’s degree in scenography from the École Supérieure de Théâtre de Montréal (UQAM) in 2016, Gabrielle Carrère completed her MFA at the University of Québec in Montréal in 2022. Although she began her artistic career with set design and puppetry, she has dedicated herself to sculpture since 2017. She has participated in various artist residencies, including in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. Additionally, she has taken part in various group exhibitions, including at Art Mûr in Montreal and White Lab in Madrid. Furthermore, Gabrielle Carrère held her first solo exhibition in 2021 at the AVE gallery in Montreal.

Artistic Approach

My work is rooted in a practice of sculpture where I create figurative works that represent humanity and nature in their fragilities and vulnerabilities. Through the creation of sculptural settings, I am particularly interested in the figure of ruin, survival, and an aesthetic of disappearance and renewal. Through a play of assemblages and combinations, I construct fictitious worlds, a community of figures that alone carries its symbolic burdens. The characters in my sculptures themselves become sites of narration and represent sensitive, individual, or collective experiences.

I work on the representation of bodies, the symbiotic cohabitation of hybrid beings in full metamorphosis within a community where spiritual, imaginary, and real elements mutually nourish each other. Clay is my primary and principal material, reminding me of earth, fertility, and a certain matrix. Thus, living beings and organic/inorganic elements blend and take shape in raw clay or ceramics in sculptures where surreal and realistic worlds coexist. Through my sculptural narratives, I attempt to shape worlds.
